VISTA Flood Recovery Impact on the Cedar Rapids Community

Build-a-thon Reflection

AmeriCorps members from coast to coast brought their talent and enthusiasm to The Habitat For Humanity Build-a-thon in Cedar Rapids. I volunteered on Moose Drive where 11 homes were being constructed. . It was amazing to look out over all the work being done and see an ocean of ‘A’s swarming the rooftops and surrounding areas of the newly built houses. Passion and commitment were in the air as dozens of skilled carpenters and hardworking builders were eager to give their time and efforts to a flood impacted community of which most of them do not live. I felt a connection to all present as a fellow AmeriCorps participant as well as someone who loves helping others. I was lucky enough to work alongside two of the future homeowners. One of which I had actually worked with to muck and gut a flood affected home on a previous day.
