Come Volunteer With Us

Why Volunteer?

As of October 2009, more than 169,000 volunteer hours have been organized
through the Volunteer Recovery Center. Over 295 groups and 6,500 volunteers
have donated their time here within Cedar Rapids. It’s an impressive amount of volunteers, yet the need is still great in Cedar Rapids. Many families are struggling
to get back on their feet.

How much of an impact can one volunteer make?
In one day a Cedar Rapids volunteer without previous construction experience can:
Spackle/mud in several rooms
Paint rooms in a house
Muck/Gut any remaining houses
So you or your team could make a big difference in the lives of people trying to get back into their homes.

How do I sign up to volunteer?
Register online with our new system! You will receive an email response as soon as your dates are approved.Click Here to Register. Once your days have been approved we recommend reading up on our packing list and housing options.
Complete the Liability Waivers (with minors obtaining a parent/guardian signature) and bring them to orientation on your first day.

What will I do as a volunteer?
You will literally help rebuild a family’s home. This may include hanging insulation or drywall, mudding/spackling, sanding, priming, painting, laying floors, and/or hanging trim, doors and baseboard. If you have significant experience any of these areas or cabinetry, please inform the Volunteer Center prior to your arrival so that we can assign you to a specialty team.

How do I sign up?
Please register online, however if you can also call (319) 540-4810. When signing up, please include the dates you are interested in volunteering and the number of people in your group.

Where will I work and how will I get there?
On your first day, you will report to the office for orientation. At that time we will assign you to a project which may change daily depending upon our projects for the week. We will give you directions to the job site but you'll have to provide your own transportation.

Does the Volunteer Center provide lodging and meals?
Unfortunately the Volunteer Center does not provide housing. Our volunteers stay at a variety of places, many staying with local churches. Click here for a list of housing options.

Does the Volunteer Center provide water at the job site?
Unfortunately, we do not have the funding to provide water for all our volunteers. So, please bring water, drinks or whatever you need to stay hydrated, especially during the summer.

If I come with a group, will we all work together?
It depends on the size of the group. The maximum number of volunteers we can accommodate at a rebuilding project is usually 6-8. Sometimes we can only accommodate 4 per house.

Does the Volunteer Center charge a fee to volunteer?
No! If you sign up with us, we just need you to register and be ready to work hard!
