Want to Volunteer?

Volunteering is the best way to show you care about your community. Anyone can be a volunteer. In flood recovery, you can help by working on-site helping residents rebuild, cooking meals for fellow volunteers, assisting with office tasks, or acting as a materials runner. A lot of good things can come from volunteering such as a free meals, fashionable t-shirts, a job, and the satisfaction of knowing you helped someone in need. It could only be for a day, but could last a lifetime.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Volunteer Reception Center (VRC) at: (319) 540-4810.

Interested in Becoming a VISTA?

Give 365 days to change the Corridor – and change your life. This year, give back to an amazing community while gaining experience in your field of interest.
Record-setting flooding during mid-June 2008 drastically impacted the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City, Iowa, area, often referred to as the Corridor. Thousands of Corridor residents have experienced a significant loss of their homes, possessions, and business viability and face health risks and displacement hardships. As the city struggles to rebuild, there is an immense need for resource allocation and assistance. Are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer but haven’t found the right fit?
Check out the “In Deep Water” video online to understand more about the Iowa Floods. VISTA Corridor Flood Recovery offers an opportunity to get involved and help others with flood relief, while earning a monthly living allowance and an educational benefit. AmeriCorps VISTA members serve 365 days for a minimum for 40 hours per week. Becoming a VISTA member is a great way to get results and make things happen. Anyone who would like a challenging opportunity to serve should check out the program.
While much of the mucking is done in Cedar Rapids, the recovery and rebuild efforts continue. Year long VISTA members are needed to provide leadership to this effort. Emphasis will be on coordinating rebuild effort, identifying the changing needs of the community, expansion of neighborhood resource centers, developing partnerships, building coalitions and securing resources.
Still wondering if this is right for you? Check out what other members have to say by watching some of the videos. Don’t let the mucking scare you away. You can also learn more about our year-around pre-flood activities by visiting www.crweedandseed.com. We are a large program with limitless possibilities!
The effort needs people with strong backs and strong arms, but also experience in housing, human services, human resources, logistics, event planning, and communication. Whatever your skill or interest, there is a need in the Cedar Rapids community.
Be a part of an organized group working in conjunction with city, county, state and federal agencies in an unprecedented collaboration.
