NCCC Round 1 Arrives

Two AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) teams are working with Weed N’ Seed and Block by Block to restore Cedar Rapids homes damaged in 2008’s disastrous floods.

Between Nov. 16 and Dec. 14, 2009, a group of 20 NCCC members have been gutting and rebuilding homes for flood victims, plus taking part in other projects such as mobilizing and training other community volunteers and overall unmet needs for community members, such as helping people move and keeping up with city code ordinances. NCCC is also assisting with neighborhood revitalization.
The NCCC teams are enthusiastic about their first projects and the impact of their work on the community. “After having the opportunity to tour

the area that was devastated by the flooding of last year, I realize

the importance of community service in Cedar Rapids," said Michael Geneve, team leader for Cedar 7, the NCCC team working with Weed N’ Seed. "And I am proud that we’ll be able to play a part of the revitalization efforts."
The NCCC members, who are between the ages of 18 and 24, must complete at least 1,700 hours of service during a span of 10 months. They are based out of the North Central Region campus, located approximately 30 miles from Cedar Rapids in Vinton, and will serve Iowa and Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Back row, L-R, is Shannon McCoy, Daniel Walker, Griffith Ryan-Roberts, Patrick Gentry, and Team Leader Michael Geneve. Front Row, L-R, Lexie Olson, Lyndsay Senerchia, Brittney Green, Steph Kasza, and Patricia Long.
