Cherry Building Open House
VISTAs helped a downtown Cedar Rapids landmark celebrate its grand reopening 16 months after the flood. An open house took place at the Cherry Building, 329 10th Ave. SE, on Oct. 23 and 24.
Coinciding with the grand reopening festivities was the grand opening of the Ceramics Center, which will offer different ceramic art programs in a large studio space on the building’s main floor. There were art demonstrations, facility tours, refreshments and entertainment at the open house.
During a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, David Chadima thanked several organizations, including VISTA Corridor Recovery, for their part in helping preserve the historic building.
“It’s been a long haul since June 13, 2008, but we’ve made a lot of progress,” said Chadima, whose Thorland Co. owns the Cherry Building. “(It’s) just great to make it this far.”
