VISTAs Cheer On Hawkeyes in Kinnick
by Brian Siguenza
IOWA CITY--The nationally-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes had a fight on their hands with Arkansas State. And members of the VISTA Corridor Recovery team got to see the action up close and personal.
The University of Iowa Athletic Department donated tickets to the Community Corrections Improvement Association, the sponsoring organization of VISTA Corridor Recovery, for the Oct. 3 game at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa stayed undefeated with a 24-21 win.
The seats were located at the very front of the north end zone, nearly putting the VISTAs on the field. The group celebrated as the Hawks scored two touchdowns right in front of them early in the game.
Members of the football team helped VISTAs this past spring in gutting two homes in the Oakhill-Jackson neighborhood of Cedar Rapids, furthering the winning partnership in the Corridor community between CCIA and the athletic department.
Hawkeye student-athletes have also served as counselors in the Youth Leadership Program, a CCIA initiative targeting at-risk fifth graders who have been identified by their school counselors as having leadership potential. In addition, W. Fred Mims, associate athletic director for the UI, is the secretary on the CCIA board of directors.
The VISTAs wish to thank the Iowa Hawkeyes for their continued support of CCIA and its initiatives.
