BRIGHTEN (Beautify Restore Improve UpGrade Houses To Empower Neighborhoods) is a volunteer-based, non-profit housing restoration initiative which provides painting, minor repair, and minor landscaping services for homeowners who are unable to independently restore their properties.
BRIGHTEN subscribes to the “broken windows” theory, which states that a maintained urban environment signals norms against criminal activity, and in turn reduces criminal behavior among residents. Therefore, by helping private homeowners restore their properties, BRIGHTEN allows entire neighborhoods to enjoy the public benefits of beautification.
