The primary volunteer opportunities are in VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) during tax season (mid-January to mid-April) and in BRIGHTEN (Beautify Restore Improve UpGrade Houses To Empower Neighborhoods) in the summer and fall.
VITA volunteers prepare tax returns, usually working two to six hours per week. They help eligible families avoid tax preparation fees and get all the credits and deductions that they are entitled to.

BRIGHTEN volunteers paint houses, perform minor repairs and landscaping, and clean up neighborhoods. Individuals and groups are welcome (All volunteers must be at least 14 years old). Groups from, for example, churches, high schools, and colleges often come to town for a week or so of volunteer work.
